UPSR/PMR to be abolished?!

an article from The Star online:

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Examinations Syndicate (MES) has proposed the abolishment of two major public examinations – the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) in Year Six and the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) in Form Three.

Its director Datuk Dr Adi Badiozaman Tuah said there would be no public examination at the primary and lower secondary levels following the proposed introduction of school-based assessment.

“If this is approved, the UPSR will be conducted for the last time in 2012 and the PMR in 2015,” he said.

is this for real?! personally i'd think it would be a good either. less pressures on teachers and students to perform and teachers might finally be able to do some teaching!(if teachers are able to run away from the textbook spoon fed teaching style) however, there are some risks involved... lower quality of education(not that it ain't already low enough) but like in japan where almost everything is school based, teachers tend to help alot and in some ways, affects overall quality.

this is a good start to revamping the education system. hopefully they'll implement it right but anything can happen in Bolehland
